What is the Wollongong Small Business Club?

The Wollongong Small Business Club (WSBC) is a monthly business networking event aimed at assisting small business operators increase their business skills, keep up to date with issues affecting small business and learn about new and innovative ways of doing business.  In addition to presentations from qualified guest speakers, the club provides opportunities for small businesses to promote and market their own products and services.

RDA Illawarra and Illawarra ITeC have hosted the club meetings for the last 14 years.

Collectively RDA Illawarra and Illawarra ITeC have one of the largest small business databases in the Illawarra.  Information about the Small Business Club and its major sponsors is promoted through these extensive databases and also through various networking partners within the Illawarra.

Where the Small Business Club Began

The Wollongong Small Business Club (WSBC) is evidence of RDA Illawarra and Illawarra ITeC's commitment to developing the business community and the Illawarra economy. WSBC has evolved as a networking and learning initiative for micro businesses, small businesses in the ‘start-up’ phase as well as for home-based businesses. The Small Business Club originally derived from a small business needs assessment survey undertaken in February 2002 by RDA Illawarra. Responses to the survey indicated the clear need for “A small business club, providing guest speakers, product promotion and networking opportunities”. In response to this demand, Virginia Wren, Executive Officer of the then Illawarra ACC (now titled RDA Illawarra) launched monthly SBC events in March 2002 and has hosted meetings every month since then.

After an initial period of government funding assistance it became apparent that we would need to obtain financial support through the facilitation of corporate sponsorship in order to ensure WSBC’s sustainability.

Who attends our events?

Each Small Business Club event attracts an average of between 60 - 100 members of the small business community with attendees ranging from sole owner operators to medium and larger size businesses and franchisees.  The membership base consists of a vast range of small business sectors and a major part of the WSBC’s success is attributed to the fact that it is open to small business operators of every size and description.

We continually seek feedback from our members attending the monthly meetings.   Here are some comments from our members:

“As a first-timer, I thoroughly enjoyed the meeting last night- and what a great networking environment!”

“There has been great benefit in finding out first hand who & what is out there to help me in my business, and also the referrals that have come my way through the networking opportunity”

“The presentations and the members of the club have inspired us greatly and have made a big difference to the way we perceive and work our business activities.”

“Members now have a much better idea of how and where to source information that can help them improve their business performance”.

What the Wollongong Small Business Club provides to its Members

Each WSBC meeting provides the opportunity for:

The Business Card Exchange – an intensive 15 minute audience participation session where members are asked to exchange five business cards with their fellow small business club members.  This has been a highly successful segment and is very well received by members.

WSBC Business Card Draw – members have the opportunity to have their business profiled at a WSBC meeting if they donate a business prize at the event.

Brain Storming Session – a business topic is selected, highlighted and then discussed at each table.   We then share ideas, solutions etc with the collective intelligence in the room.   This is a great way for businesses to share ideas and is well received.

Marketing Area – All WSBC members are welcome to display their promotional material at a ‘marketing table’ located in the venue for all to see.

RDA Illawarra & Illawarra ITeC Website – The WSBC Business to Business Directory is a valuable marketing tool available to members at no cost.  It is also a great way of supporting other local small businesses.

Networking with other businesses and a range of small business service providers.  Both and RDA Illawarra AND Illawarra ITeC have strong alliances with Commonwealth, State and Local government organisations including Dept of AusIndustry, NSW Dept of Industry, Wollongong City Council, the Illawarra Business Chamber, Australian Industry Group as well as other smaller business networking groups.

Guest Speakers

A major draw card of the Club is the prominent and high profile guest speakers presenting at each meeting who impart valuable business growth strategies and information to members.

To date the WSBC has been privileged enough to host presentations from highly regarded speakers such as Justin Herald, Tony Gattari, Robert Gerrish, Linda Hailey, Robyn Henderson, Ita Buttrose, Peter Switzer, David Caruso.  All of these speakers are published authors and have had international experience in marketing and small business growth.

The venue for the Wollongong Small Business Club is The Villa Doro Function Centre located in Flinders Street, Wollongong.  Meetings start at 5.15pm for networking, with the formal presentations starting at 6.00pm and usually finishing between 7.30 – 7.45pm.

Why We Seek Sponsorship?

We believe that the continued growth of the small business sector is vital to the long-term health of the Illawarra economy and therefore seek sponsorship to assist small businesses to grow and to become more sustainable, thus employing more local people. The Small Business Club is a vital part of this strategy.
